This project studies the feasibility of developing a 412-bed residence hall on the South Campus of the University of Missouri, St. Louis. The picturesque site, which features mature trees and views to landscaped park land and recreation areas, lies adjacent to Seton Hall, pictured right.
With four beds in each suite, there are five double-bedroom suites and 98 single-bedroom suites, totaling 103 suites. Each suite has a living room area. In the bathroom area, a two-sink vanity separates a toilet and shower area from another toilet area. The bedrooms are sized to accommodate appropriate furniture. The project also includes 8,000 sf of amenity space, including lounges, quiet lounges, a computer lab, a small classroom, and laundry.
The new building will provide a physical link to Seton Hall, connecting both on the ground floor and lower floor levels. With this connection to Seton Hall, existing amenity and classroom space in Seton Hall can also be utilized. Without leaving the building, students will be able to go to classes, eat, exercise, and reside.
An alternate scheme was priced that includes a new, 3,000 sf community room (shell space only); under this alternative, room count drops to 404 rooms, as two four-bed suites are displaced by the community room space. The conceptual cost estimates assumed bidding the project in spring of 2003.
The new building is designed to locate the bedroom suites in two building bars facing north-south and linked at the east end by public amenity spaces. The link, including lobby and lounges, is very open with large areas of glass providing excellent views to the landscaped surroundings. In the night the glass enclosures will become a glowing beacon, enhancing the complex in the landscape.
Clare, Randall-Smith & Associates Limited was retained to provide the mechanical and electrical cost estimates for this prestigious project. |
