The reclamation of what is thought to be Canada's oldest farmer's market is an initial step in the city's plan to redevelop its downtown core.

The vision is an improved venue for the farmers market - as well as reestablishing the market square as the community's gathering place.

The restoration of the 200 year old historic market has a construction budget of C$5.4 million.

In the initial phase of the re-development are an outdoor skating rink and an expanded market vendor area. The construction plans also include underground infrastructure work on Market Street. The surface will be finished with interlocking stone.

The new rink in market square will be permanent and is scheduled to operate between November and April. It will provide a skating surface even during mild winter temperatures. A gazebo will creatively house the refrigeration equipment and avoid the need for generators on site. When the ice is removed, the whole surface area of the market will become available for the market vendors.

Clare, Randall-Smith & Associates Limited was retained to provide mechanical and electrical cost consulting services during the design phase of this significant project.
