The Embassy promotes Canadian interests in trade, political-economic issues, culture, education, military, defense and police liaison, and international development.

The redevelopment of the Canadian Embassy compound in Beijing, China, was an $11 million design-build project undertaken by the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade and completed in 2000.

The project involved the demolition, gutting and rebuilding of various structures on purchased land adjacent to the Embassy compound resulting in a new three-storey immigration office/administration building, a new four-storey embassy staff residence and a new service building, parking garage and site development.

Specific project work included the replacement of all exterior cladding, mechanical and electrical systems and interior finishes to meet Canadian building code standards, as well as the modification of building structures to meet Canadian seismic design requirements.

Clare, Randall-Smith & Associates Limited provided a variety of mechanical and electrical cost consulting services for the project, including developing and updating the project budget, and preparing cost checks during design.
